The right EV depends on how you'll use it. Start with your daily distance, not the brochure
The most common mistake Indian EV buyers make is choosing a vehicle around the longest journey they might take once a year, rather than the distance they cover every day. A battery is the most expensive part of an electric vehicle, so every extra kilometre of range you buy but never use is money spent for nothing. Work out your genuine daily running from your odometer over a month, add a comfortable margin for traffic and detours, and treat that as your requirement. For the occasional long trip, plan a charging stop instead of paying a lakh or more for range that sits idle for 360 days a year.
Be equally realistic about the range figure itself. Manufacturers quote ARAI or IDC numbers measured under controlled test conditions; in Indian traffic, with the air-conditioning running and a full load on board, real-world range typically lands 20 to 30 per cent below the claim. Highway cruising at 100 km/h consumes noticeably more than city driving, which is the opposite of what petrol owners are used to. Where you charge decides which EV suits you
Charging access shapes the decision more than any specification. If you have a dedicated parking spot where a charge point can be installed, home charging at ₹6–9 per unit makes an EV dramatically cheaper to run, and overnight charging means you begin every day full. In that situation, a mid-size battery is usually plenty and fast-charging capability matters mainly for road trips.
If you park on the street or in a shared society lot without a socket, the calculation changes. You will depend on public charging at ₹15–25 per unit, which narrows the running cost advantage, and you should weight DC fast-charging support and charger availability in your area far more heavily. Reading the specifications that actually matter
Battery capacity in kWh is the closest thing to a fuel-tank size, and it drives both range and price. Charging speed comes in two parts: AC charging (typically 3.3 to 11 kW) governs how long an overnight top-up takes, while DC fast charging (25 kW and above) determines how quickly you can add range on a journey. For most owners, the 10 to 80 per cent fast-charge time is a more useful figure than peak kW, because charging slows deliberately as the battery fills.
Connector type is worth checking early: most electric cars sold in India use CCS2 for fast charging and Type 2 for AC, and a model outside that standard limits where you can charge. Beyond the drivetrain, weigh the ordinary things — boot space, ground clearance for Indian roads, seating, and the manufacturer's service reach in your city, which matters more for EVs than for petrol vehicles because fewer independent garages can service them.
Finish with the money, not the excitement
Once you have two or three models on your shortlist, decide on total cost of ownership rather than showroom price. Subtract the central and state incentives you can actually claim, add financing cost, then project five years of energy and maintenance at your real distance.
