The electric car market in India today

India's electric car market has moved from a handful of compliance models to a genuine range of choices across price bands. Entry-level options now start close to ₹8 lakh, mainstream family SUVs cluster between ₹15 and ₹25 lakh, and the premium and luxury segment extends well beyond that. Tata pioneered volume adoption and still leads on numbers, MG and Mahindra have built strong positions in the mid and upper-mid segments, Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki have brought mass-market credibility, and global brands including BYD, Kia, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo compete at the top. The practical result for a buyer is that the question has shifted from whether there is an electric car worth having to which one fits your usage.

How to compare electric cars properly

Start with real-world range rather than the claimed ARAI or MIDC figure. Certification cycles are measured in controlled conditions; on Indian roads, with air-conditioning running and a full load, expect roughly 20 to 30 per cent less. A car rated at 450 km typically delivers 320 to 360 km in mixed use, and less at sustained highway speeds. Next look at charging: the AC onboard charger rating (3.3 to 11 kW) determines how long an overnight home charge takes, while DC fast-charging capability and the 10 to 80 per cent time determine how usable the car is on a long journey. Battery capacity in kWh sets both range and price, and efficiency — how many kilometres the car extracts from each kWh — separates well-engineered cars from merely large-battery ones.

What ownership actually costs

Electric cars cost more to buy and considerably less to run. Charging at home on a domestic tariff of ₹6–9 per unit works out to roughly ₹1–2 per kilometre against ₹6–8 for petrol, and servicing is cheaper because there is no engine oil, filter, clutch or exhaust to maintain. For a driver covering 1,200 to 1,500 km a month, fuel savings alone commonly run ₹6,000 to ₹9,000, which over five years often exceeds the purchase premium. Add the incentives that apply — several states waive road tax and registration, and loan interest deduction has been available under Section 80EEB — and the total cost of ownership frequently favours the EV even where the sticker price does not.

Charging access is the real deciding factor

Before choosing a model, be honest about where it will charge. Owners with dedicated parking and a home charge point get the full economic benefit and rarely think about range, since the car starts every day full. Owners dependent on public charging pay ₹15–25 per unit, need to weight DC fast-charging capability and local charger density much more heavily, and should check what genuinely exists around them.
