The EVSelect verdict on the Ola S1Z
The S1Z is the first Ola scooter where the interesting engineering is not on the scooter at all — it is in the cell. By making its own 46-series LFP cells at the Gigafactory rather than buying them in, Ola has taken the single largest cost in an electric two-wheeler in-house, and the S1Z is what that buys you: 179 km of claimed range for ₹79,999, or 301 km for ₹99,999. LFP is a sensible chemistry for this job, though for narrower reasons than the marketing suggests. Its genuine advantages are cycle life — typically two to three times the charge cycles of the nickel-based cells most rivals use — and a much higher thermal-runaway threshold, which is a safety property rather than a hot-weather one. It will not hold its range better through a Delhi May, and it is measurably worse in the cold. What it should do is still be a healthy battery at an age when an NMC pack is not, which matters more to someone clocking 40 km a day than any performance figure does.
The catch is that none of this has been ridden yet. Deliveries of the 3.1 kWh version start in December 2026 and the 301 km variant not until March 2027, so every number here is Ola's own claim measured on the IDC lab cycle — we have not tested one, and neither has anybody else. Two things are worth weighing before you put down the ₹999 reservation. The 70 km/h top speed is a deliberate commuter choice that rules the S1Z out of flyover and highway use in a way the S1 Pro never was. And Ola's after-sales network remains the open question it has been for years; the cell technology is genuinely impressive, but a battery you cannot get serviced locally is still a problem.
On the money, the upgrade is the better buy if you can wait. The extra ₹20,000 for the 5.1 kWh pack buys 122 km of additional claimed range, which is ₹164 per extra kilometre. Comparing like with like across the whole price, the 5.1 kWh works out at ₹332 per claimed kilometre against the base scooter's ₹447 — so on paper the bigger battery is the better value of the two, not merely the more expensive one. The 3.1 kWh version makes sense if you genuinely commute under 40 km a day and want the December date; anything more and the larger pack is the one that will not annoy you in two years, provided a March 2027 delivery is something you can live with.
Ola S1Z range in real-world Indian conditions
The Ola S1Z is rated at 179 km on the certification cycle. We have not measured one ourselves, so there is no real-world figure on this page — where a scooter has launched but has not yet reached customers, an honest answer is that nobody knows yet, including us. What can be said is what holds across the segment: real-world range in India generally lands 20 to 30 per cent below the certified claim once traffic, ambient heat, load and higher average speeds are accounted for. Applied to 179 km that points to somewhere around 125 to 143 km — a rule of thumb to plan against, not a measurement.
On that basis a daily round trip of up to roughly 81 km should be comfortable on a single charge with margin for detours, which for most riders means charging every second or third day rather than nightly. Servicing is the quieter saving. An electric drivetrain has no engine oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, clutch or exhaust system, so scheduled maintenance is largely brakes, tyres, coolant where fitted, and cabin filters. Regenerative braking also reduces brake pad wear considerably. Insurance is broadly comparable to an equivalent petrol vehicle, and several states waive or reduce road tax and registration charges for electric vehicles, which lowers on-road cost further.

What accelerates degradation is well understood: sustained heat, frequent DC fast charging, and habitually leaving the vehicle at 100 or 0 per cent state of charge. The practical habits that extend pack life are simple — charge to about 80 per cent for daily use and to full only before a long journey, avoid leaving the vehicle at very low charge for extended periods, park in shade where possible, and prefer slower AC charging when there is no time pressure. Owners who follow these see noticeably better long-term capacity than those who fast-charge to 100 per cent daily.
Check the warranty carefully before purchase, since battery cover is usually stated separately from the vehicle warranty and is typically expressed as a number of years or kilometres, whichever comes first, sometimes with a minimum state-of-health guarantee. That guarantee is where much of an EV's long-term value protection sits.
Who the Ola S1Z is right for
At ₹79,999–99,999 ex-showroom, the Ola S1Z sits at an accessible price point. That combination points to a fairly specific buyer: longer urban commutes and daily riding.
It makes the clearest sense for someone with a predictable daily distance comfortably inside that range and somewhere practical to charge.
