Why the sticker price is the wrong number to compare

Almost every EV-versus-petrol argument in India goes wrong in the same place: people compare showroom prices. An electric car usually costs more to buy and dramatically less to run, so comparing only the purchase price answers a question nobody actually has. What matters is the total cost of ownership — purchase price minus subsidies, plus financing cost, plus energy, plus maintenance and insurance, minus what the vehicle is worth when you sell it.

The gap between the two views is large. Running an electric car costs roughly ₹1–2 per kilometre on home charging against ₹6–8 per kilometre for petrol; for two-wheelers it is about ₹0.15–0.30 against ₹2–3. Maintenance is lower too, because an electric drivetrain has no engine oil, filters, spark plugs, clutch or exhaust to service. Someone driving 1,500 km a month can save ₹6,000–9,000 monthly on fuel alone — which, over a five-year ownership, often more than covers the higher purchase price. Which calculator to use, and when

Use them in the order a real purchase happens. Getting accurate results

And your ownership period determines whether upfront savings or running savings dominate the answer.

Two habits improve the quality of your decision. First, model a pessimistic case alongside your expected one — lower the monthly distance, raise the tariff, and see whether the maths still works. Second, remember what these tools deliberately leave out: insurance differences, road tax (waived in several states for EVs), and resale value, which is still stabilising in the Indian EV market. Treat the outputs as a well-informed estimate for comparison rather than a quotation.
