Break-even is the only number that matters

Almost every electric-versus-petrol comparison leads with cost per kilometre — ₹0.30 against ₹2.10 — because the ratio looks spectacular. But nobody buys a scooter per kilometre. You pay a lump sum upfront and recover it slowly, so the question that actually decides the purchase is how long the recovery takes, and whether you will still own the scooter by then.

For a typical rider covering 35 km a day in a state with a decent subsidy, the answer is roughly nine months. That is short enough that almost any owner comes out ahead. But the same scooter in a state with no subsidy takes about nineteen months, and a rider covering only 10 km a day takes over two years. Same vehicle, same fuel prices — three very different decisions.

Where the saving actually comes from

Fuel is the obvious part. At ₹105 a litre and 50 km/l, a petrol scooter ridden 12,800 km a year burns about ₹27,000 of petrol. The same distance on electricity costs about ₹4,100 at ₹8 a unit, including the roughly 12% lost to charging inefficiency that most calculators ignore.

The part people forget is servicing. A petrol scooter needs oil changes, filters, spark plugs and valve attention — realistically ₹3,000–4,000 a year. An electric scooter has no engine to service; you are looking at brake pads, tyres and occasional software updates, around ₹1,200 a year. Over five years that difference alone is worth about ₹11,000, roughly half the upfront premium in many states.

When petrol is still the right answer

It would be easy to write this page as though electric always wins. It doesn't, and the calculator above will tell you so.

The battery question, answered honestly

This is the single biggest fear stopping people buying, so it deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance. A replacement pack costs roughly ₹25,000–45,000 today. Warranties typically run three years or 30,000 km, and real-world packs generally last six to eight years before capacity loss becomes genuinely inconvenient.

The calculator deliberately leaves this out of the totals rather than burying an assumption you cannot see. The practical reading: over a five-year ownership you will most likely never pay it, and the saving stands. Over ten years, assume one replacement — and note that on the figures above a Maharashtra rider saves over a lakh in five years, which absorbs a ₹40,000 pack comfortably. Cell prices have also fallen steadily, so a replacement in 2032 will probably cost less in real terms than it does now.

Frequently asked questions

Is an electric scooter still worth buying now the subsidy has ended?

For most daily riders, yes — but the maths got tighter. The central PM E-DRIVE incentive for two-wheelers closed on 31 July 2026, removing up to ₹5,000 from the effective price. On a typical ₹1.3 lakh electric scooter in Maharashtra, ridden 35 km a day, the break-even against a ₹90,000 petrol scooter is now around nine months, because the running-cost gap of roughly ₹25,000 a year repays the upfront premium quickly. In a state with no subsidy and no road-tax waiver, such as Uttar Pradesh, the same purchase takes about nineteen months to break even.

How much does an electric scooter really save per year?

At 35 km a day — around 12,800 km a year — a typical electric scooter costs about ₹5,300 a year to run including servicing, against roughly ₹30,000 for a 50 km/l petrol scooter at ₹105 a litre. That is a saving of about ₹25,000 a year, of which roughly ₹2,300 comes from lower servicing alone, since there is no engine oil, filter or spark plug to replace. The gap widens the more you ride and narrows sharply if you ride very little.

At what daily distance does an electric scooter stop making sense?

Below roughly 15 km a day the case weakens considerably. At 10 km a day the annual saving falls to around ₹8,800, so a ₹20,000 upfront premium takes over two years to repay and the five-year advantage shrinks to around ₹24,000 — real, but small enough that convenience and charging access should decide it rather than money. If you ride only at weekends, a petrol scooter is usually the more sensible financial choice.

Does the state I live in really change the answer?

Substantially, and it is the most underrated variable. State subsidies range from ₹20,000 in Assam down to nothing at all, and the road-tax waiver is worth around 8% of ex-showroom price on top. On a ₹1.3 lakh scooter that is a swing of roughly ₹30,000 between the best and worst states — enough to double the break-even period. Uttar Pradesh's policy has lapsed entirely and Gujarat discontinued its subsidy in 2024, so buyers there face the full price.

What about battery replacement — doesn't that wipe out the saving?

It is the right question to ask, and this calculator deliberately excludes it so you can judge the risk yourself. If you plan to keep the scooter five years you will most likely never pay it; if you plan to keep it ten, budget for one replacement and the lifetime saving still usually stays positive.

Should I include insurance in the comparison?

You can, but it rarely changes the verdict. Third-party premiums are set by engine capacity or battery power and work out broadly similar for comparable scooters, and while comprehensive cover on an electric scooter can be slightly higher because the insured value is higher, the difference is typically a few hundred rupees a year against a running-cost gap of tens of thousands. This calculator leaves insurance out rather than pretending to a precision it cannot deliver.

Does charging at home versus at a public point change things?

For two-wheelers, far less than it does for cars. A 3 kWh scooter battery costs about ₹27 to fill at a domestic ₹8 per unit, and almost all owners charge at home overnight from an ordinary socket because the portable charger ships with the scooter. Public two-wheeler charging exists but is rarely necessary given the small battery, so the home rate is the one that matters.
