India's electric-car market has closed its strongest quarter yet. Between April and June 2026 — the first quarter of FY2027 — 82,737 electric passenger vehicles were registered on the government's Vahan portal, an 89% jump over the 43,710 units recorded in the same period last year. The quarter ended on a high, with June alone crossing 30,000 monthly EV sales for the first time.

Tata stretches its lead

Tata Motors remained the runaway leader with 32,283 registrations, more than double the 15,794 it logged a year earlier, lifting its market share from 36.1% to 39%. The surge came on the back of a refreshed lineup and the newly launched Sierra EV, which joined the Nexon EV, Punch EV and Tiago EV in showrooms at the end of June. Mahindra was the quarter's biggest climber: registrations nearly doubled from 10,144 to 20,112 units — the first time the SUV maker has crossed 20,000 in a single quarter, powered by the BE 6, XEV 9e and the new XEV 9S.

MG holds third; Maruti and VinFast arrive

JSW MG Motor took third place with 16,502 units, up 22% year-on-year, as the Windsor EV and Comet EV continued to anchor its volumes. The quarter also marked the scoreboard debut of two new players: Maruti Suzuki registered 4,894 units of the e Vitara, while Vietnam's VinFast recorded 3,973 registrations in its first full quarter of Indian sales. BYD, despite steep import duties, grew 54% to 5,361 units. Hyundai was among the few to buck the growth trend.

What it means for buyers

A market that has nearly doubled in a year means more choice, faster discounting and quicker feature upgrades. Five brands now post meaningful monthly volumes, and new entrants are pricing aggressively to buy share.
