Tata EV Sales Cross 10,000 in a Month for the First Time

Tata Motors has hit a milestone in the electric-car market. In May 2026 the company sold more than 10,500 electric vehicles — the first time it has crossed the 10,000-unit mark in a single month — as India's broader EV market posted one of its strongest showings of the year. It was also a banner month overall for Tata, which edged ahead of Mahindra in the passenger-vehicle sales race.

The headline numbers

Tata's EV volumes were up roughly 85% year-on-year, and the company remained India's largest electric passenger-vehicle maker with close to a 39% share of the EV market for the month. Across all powertrains, Tata sold about 59,790 passenger vehicles (a ~42% annual rise), enough to pip Tata's rival Mahindra, which reported around 58,000 domestic SUV sales. Industry-wide, India's EV sales climbed sharply in May, with both Tata and Mahindra extending their lead at the top.

Why May was so strong

As with two-wheelers, the trigger was at the fuel pump. Petrol, diesel and CNG prices all rose during the month, widening the running-cost gap that already favours electric. For buyers running the numbers, the case for an EV gets stronger every time fuel climbs — our petrol-vs-electric cost calculator shows how those monthly savings stack up over a few years of ownership.

What's powering Tata's lead

Tata's strength rests on a broad lineup that spans price points — from the affordable Tiago and Punch EVs to the Nexon EV and the newer, born-electric Curvv and Harrier EVs. That range, combined with the widest EV service footprint among Indian carmakers, keeps Tata ahead even as Maruti, Mahindra, Hyundai and MG sharpen their electric offerings. The momentum sets up an interesting second half of 2026, with the much-anticipated Tata Sierra EV expected to add a premium option to the portfolio.
